Esomeprazole is an acid pump inhibitor (or proton pump inhibitor) that is used to treat heartburn or esophagitis (inflammation of the food pipe) due to acid reflux disease (GERD). It turns off some of the acid pumps in the stomach reducing the amount of acid backing up into the esophagus. It may be used for prevention of ulcers associated with usage of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It may also be administered in combination with other drugs to prevent ulcers of the small intestines.
