Information about Inderal

Propranolol is in a class of beta-blockers that affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). It may also be used for the treatment or prevention heart attack, and to reduce the severity and frequency of migraine headaches. Propranolol may also be used as directed by your doctor.

You should not use Propranolol in the following cases: you have asthma, bronchitis, emphysema; diabetes; low blood pressure; a heart problem such as heart block, sick sinus syndrome, slow heart rate, or congestive heart failure; depression; liver or kidney disease; a thyroid disorder; myasthenia gravis; pheochromocytoma; or problems with circulation (such as Raynaud's syndrome).

If you have any of these conditions, you may need special dosage or monitoring. It may also happen that you are not able to take Propranolol.

Propranolol is in the FDA pregnancy category C. There is no reliable data whether Propranolol is deleterious to an unborn baby. Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or if you are breast-feeding a baby, as Propranolol passes into breast milk.

How should I take Propranolol?

Take Propranolol according to the prescription of your doctor. Propranolol is to be taken orally with a full glass of water. Do take propranolol at the same time every day. Do not crush, chew, break, or open an extended-release capsule. Swallow the pill whole. It is slowly released in the body.

Measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your doctor for one.

Do not change doses or stop taking Propranolol without medical consultation. You may make your condition worse by stopping suddenly.

LAB TESTS, including blood pressure monitoring, may be performed to monitor your progress.

Let your doctor or dentist know that you take Propranolol before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

The treatment of hypertension may also include diet, exercise, and weight control. Follow all the recommendations.

Hypertension may have no symptoms, so you may not even notice that you have high blood pressure. Continue using this medicine, even if nothing bothers you. You may need to use blood pressure medication for the rest of your life.

Store Propranolol at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

What happens if I miss a dose?

For regular (short-acting) Propranolol: You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If your next dose is less than 4 hours away, do not take an extra tablet to catch up for the dose you forgot. Wait and take your next tablet at the regular time.

For extended-release Propranolol (Inderal LA, InnoPran XL and others): You should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If your next dose is less than 8 hours away, do not take an extra tablet to catch up for the dose you forgot. Wait and take your next tablet at the regular time.

Do not take a double dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Uneven heartbeats, shortness of breath, bluish-colored fingernails, dizziness, weakness, fainting, or seizure (convulsions) are the most common symptoms of an overdose. If an overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention.

What should I avoid while taking Propranolol?

Propranolol may cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions, so be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. You should avoid such activities if you experience such side effects. Alcohol may increase such symptoms. Avoid taking alcohol and other medicines.

What are the possible side effects of Propranolol?

Seek emergency if you experience any sever side effect: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Contact your doctor immediate if you experience any of these serious side effects: slow or uneven heartbeats; feeling light-headed, fainting; feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion; swelling of your ankles or feet; nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); depression; or cold feeling in your hands and feet.

Other not serious side effects may occur: decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm; sleep problems (insomnia); tired feeling; or anxiety, nervousness.

Contact your doctor if any side effect not listed above occurs.

Be aware that Propranolol may interact with some medicines. Consult with your doctor in case you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the next: antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen); atropine; barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions); cimetidine; cocaine; ergotamine; hawthorn; levodopa; medicines for colds and breathing difficulties; medicines for diabetes; medicines for high blood pressure; medicines for mental depression; medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances; medicines to control heart rhythm; rifampin; theophylline; tubocurarine; water pills.
